how it works

Your first acupuncture visit is 90 minutes and includes a thorough discussion of your health history, medical intake, exam, treatment plan, dietary recommendations, and a 30-minute acupuncture session in one of our cozy treatment rooms on a heated treatment table. Follow-up appointments are 45 minutes and include acupuncture and any other treatment modalities your acupuncturist deems necessary to meet your health goals.

All new patient dermatology and skincare appointments include a skin examination, a thorough discussion of your skincare history and concerns, a treatment plan, and your scheduled skincare treatment.

investment

You are the greatest investment you will ever make. It is less expensive to invest in your wellness than to pay for your illness. I can’t count the number of times someone has said, “I wish I would have started acupuncture sooner,” instead of as a last resort after trying all other medical interventions.

Acupuncture guides the body to naturally restore balance. The number of treatments needed is determined by how long there has been an imbalance, a person’s lifestyle, and their genetics. Everybody, regardless of the issue, will need at least six to ten sessions for a newly occurring issue. Although someone may feel better after three or four sessions, I encourage patients to complete their treatment plan to reinforce the body’s ability to stay in balance and maintain health.

Long-standing issues like migraine headaches, digestive issues, chronic pains, and menstrual issues require 10-20 treatments and sometimes more, since the body has now accepted this imbalance as its new normal, and it takes more time to get the body back into balance.

General guidelines for best skincare results are: 4-6+ months for dermatology, 4-6 micro- or nanoneedling sessions, and 12 cosmetic acupuncture/facial rejuvenation sessions. We will determine your individualized treatment plan at your first skincare visit.

insurance

We are out of network with all insurance companies and do not submit insurance claims. We require payment at the time of each service. Upon request, we will provide a superbill to patients to submit to their insurance company for reimbursement.

policies

Please be mindful of our cancellation & refund policies.

Treatment times are reserved just for you to make sure you get my full attention and assure your treatment is not rushed. I kindly ask that you give at least 24 hours notice when cancelling or rescheduling your acupuncture appointment, and 48 hours notice when cancelling or rescheduling a skincare appointment. Cancellations and reschedules with less than 24/48 hours notice or no-shows will be charged a missed appointment fee equal to the treatment fee. This policy is waived in the case of a true emergency. Every patient gets one late cancellation or no call/no show missed appointment “freebie,” and this is documented in your patient file. You will be liable for any cancellation fees should you wish to continue care at Roots to Blooms Acupuncture & Wellness.

Please arrive on time or a few minutes early for your appointment. Patients arriving 15 minutes or later for their appointment will be charged a missed appointment fee equal to the treatment fee and will need to be rescheduled if my schedule can’t accommodate your late arrival.

Patients who habitually cancel, reschedule, or arrive late will be dismissed from the practice.

To maintain the relaxing and healing environment of the clinic, there is no cell phone use allowed. Please silence your phone in the receptions area, treatment room, and during your treatment; answer texts, calls, and emails after you leave the clinic.

Making an appointment is like buying a concert ticket: you chose the date and time and made the commitment to be there. If you decide at the last minute that something else is more important than your acupuncture appointment, you lose the cost of your acupuncture “ticket.” Unless schools are closed, we are in the office and the show is happening. I can’t make you choose prioritizing your health and wellbeing, and I fully support you when you do, but I also can’t allow others’ choice to disrupt my business.

The following situations cause a disruption in business flow and income and will still incur a missed appointment fee:

  • You have been sick a couple of days and are “waiting it out,” then decide to cancel a couple hours before your appointment. It is your responsibility to inform the office as soon as you feel unwell if it is close to your appointment date.

  • “There’s a conflicting appointment.” Most businesses send out appointment reminders or make

reminder calls more than 24 hours beforehand.

  • “Something came up.” Unless the conflict is a true emergency, there will still be a late cancellation fee. Lunch with friends, dog grooming, and hair appointments are not emergencies.

  • Work conflict cancellations: I am an acupuncture physician, and a physician appointment is a valid reason for missing work.

For inclement weather during the winter months, we follow Lake Geneva Joint #1 Schools and Lake Geneva-Genoa City Union (Badger) High School regarding school closings for weather. We will waive our cancellation fee should schools be closed.

We will accept cancellations by email jessica@rootstobloomsacu.com, phone, and text 262.475.9661.

Refunds are not available on treatments or products. Unopened products can be exchanged for other merchandise or an account credit. In the case of damaged or spoiled products, we offer an exchange for the same or a similar product, stock on hand permitting.

At Roots to Blooms Acupuncture & Wellness we are committed to providing non-judgmental, compassionate, and harm reductionist acupuncture. The clinic is open to all ages, races, body types, abilities, sexual orientations, classes, and gender identities.

what’s next?

Let’s talk about your first appointment!

  • Before your first appointment, please fill out our New Patient Forms which will be delivered to you via emailed link.

  • Be sure to eat a meal or snack within two hours of coming to your appointment and avoid caffeinated beverages until afterward.

  • For your appointment wear loose, comfortable clothes that can be pulled up above your elbows and knees. For some types of treatments, you may need to disrobe, and we will maintain your modesty with sheets, towels, or blankets.

  • During your appointment, we will assess your condition and develop a treatment plan that is unique to your presentation. We will discuss treatment frequency, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, and if needed, an herbal formula prescription. During your acupuncture treatment, you may feel drowsy or even fall asleep, and we encourage you to relax into your 'acu nap.'

  • After your treatment refrain from vigorous activity such as working out; be sure to drink plenty of water and get adequate rest. Your body will be processing the treatment for the next 24-48 hours.

  • Call the office right away with any post-treatment concerns: (262) 475-9661.

We accept cash, checks, credit cards, and HSA cards and are out of network with all insurance companies. We require full payment at the time of service but are happy to provide you with a Superbill to give to your insurance company for reimbursement.

We require 24 hours’ notice for canceled appointments. Appointments not canceled within that time and no-shows will be charged a missed appointment fee. Patients arriving 15 minutes or more late for their appointment may be rescheduled and charged a missed appointment fee if we are not able to accommodate the late arrival.

FAQs

For information about your first acupuncture appointment or insurance questions, please visit the Start Here page.

Does your office take my insurance?

We do not work with any insurance companies and payment is required at the time of service. If you have insurance benefits that cover acupuncture, we are happy to provide you with a “superbill” that has the necessary diagnostic and treatment codes. You can submit this document to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of tiny, sterile pins into predetermined acupuncture points on the body. The stimulation of these points sends signals to the brain and central nervous system to release endorphins, promote local circulation to tissues to reduce inflammation and pain, and to put back into balance systems that have become unbalanced.

Acupuncture is one branch of several that form Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) and is the most well-known aspect of TEAM. Other branches of TEAM include nutrition and food therapy, qi gong and tai ji, herbal medicine, and bodywork that can include moxibustion, cupping, and a manual therapy called tui na.

How does acupuncture work?

After your acupuncturist reviews your medical history, asks you questions about your condition based on TCM theory, takes your pulses, and looks at your tongue to determine the state of your internal organs and body systems, hair-thin, sterile, stainless steel needles are inserted into specific points and can alter biochemical and physiological conditions within the body.

Nerve fibers transmit signals to the spinal cord and brain stimulating the central nervous system to release hormones that make us feel better, regulate blood pressure, regulate the immune system, and reduce pain. Acupuncture's effects are transmitted via electric, hormonal, lymphatic, neurologic, and electromagnetic pathways.

Which conditions does acupuncture treat?

The National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization recognize that acupuncture can treat many illnesses including allergies, asthma, constipation, digestive issues, fibromyalgia, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic and acute pain, muscle aches and strains, sinus issues, insomnia, menstrual and menopausal symptoms, skin conditions, tendonitis, and stress.

In our acupuncturist’s opinion, managing stress and getting enough sleep can help to minimize other health issues.

Does acupuncture hurt?

In general, no, acupuncture does not hurt. There are certain acupuncture points that may be more reactive when needled and you may feel a small "burst" or electrical sensation as the needle breaks the skin.

How many treatments will I need?

All acupuncture treatments are tailored to the individual and the signs and symptoms they are presenting with on the day of treatment. This means your treatment frequency may be different than someone else’s, but in general, we recommend all new patients start with two treatments per week for four weeks in a row. Following this plan, you will feel better faster and will notice changes quicker, as acupuncture effects are cumulative and the closer together the treatments, the better the results. While we understand this treatment frequency may not be possible for all patients, the minimum treatment frequency for new patients is one time per week for six to eight weeks.

It is always my goal to get patients from the acute/distress stage to the maintenance phase of treatment as quickly as possible. If I feel acupuncture is not working for someone, I will not waste their time or mine and will dismiss them from treatment after a few treatments.

A severe or chronic pain condition or issue such as neuropathy will require at least 16- 20 visits.

Medium level pain or conditions like digestion or insomnia will require at least 10-16 visits.

Mild or acute pain or conditions like allergies or newly acquired muscle injuries need 6-10 visits.

What does my acupuncturist mean by “herbs” and “formulas?”

In the hierarchy of Traditional East Asian Medicine, nutrition and herbs are considered the superior medicines. Often, an acupuncturist will prescribe a “formula,” also known as “herbs” for your condition. These medicines work internally to create balance and health by treating root cause issues and not just managing symptoms. Herbal formulas can treat a range of conditions from acute illnesses like the common cold and flu to chronic diseases like allergies, digestive and menstrual disorders, and insomnia. TEAM creates formulas from ingredients that work synergistically, which alleviates most side effects, unlike side effects caused by single ingredient pharmaceuticals or supplements.

Since formulas and herbs work on root causes, the effects will not be immediate, and you may need to be on a formula for several months. The good news is, as the root cause is treated and resolved, you may no longer need to take any type of herbal intervention. Throughout your treatment, as your condition changes, your herbal prescription may change. For skin conditions, herbs are prescribed for six weeks up to six months depending on the severity of the skin issue. Always consult your prescribing herbalist before stopping or altering how you take your herbal formula.

I have heard that Chinese herbs are made of shark fins and seahorses, is this true?

While most Traditional East Asian Medicine herbal formulas are made with flowers, roots, leaves, barks, and minerals, there are a few that are made of animal parts like the exoskeletons of cicadas which are collected after they molt.

It is in the folk medicines of some Asian cultures that seahorses and shark fins are used for virility and health, but they are NOT part of Traditional East Asian Medicine.

I source my herbal products from suppliers that employ farmers who use sustainable and ethical farming methods. The herbs are GMP certified and tested for pesticides and heavy metals. Many of the animal products used historically have been replaced with plant and mineral sources. I do not use herbal formulas that contain animals, especially endangered species.
